Kare to Men / カレと。Men - Kiyosumi-Shirakawa
Kare to Men (カレと。Men) has made waves among curry ramen lovers when it opened in 2020. It immediately hit all the ramen magazines and all the ramen heads flocked there to fill their Instagram feeds with their fancy looking bowls. It was about time that I went there myself together with Cody from Ramenguidejapan. Check out his website for the best ramen reviews online: Ramenguidejapan.com
Kare to Men serves a fusion dish of curry and ramen. On the curry side, the spice and flavor combo can best be described as somewhere in between Japanese curry and Indian curry. The liquid for the curry is a ramen style broth, which gives a certain depth and umami to the curry soup, which some other curry shops miss, if they just use water as a base. Kare to Men also serves regular non-curry ramen from time to time, where you can give their soup a try without the added curry masala.
We both ordered their beef katsu special bowl, which is limited to 10 bowls a day. The bowl of noodles and curry ramen soup comes topped with a number of beautifully arranged veggies, a ajitama ramen egg, the limited edition fried beef, a bowl of turmeric rice on the side and some cheese, on the side as well. When you order your bowl, the shop staff will ask you, if you want your bowl spicy or not. We went for the spicy option, which had a nice spiciness to it, but nothing unbearable, so you don't have to be a spice head to be able to stomach the spicy bowl. The noodles that come in the bowl are thick, slurpy and stand up well to the rich curry soup. Beyond serving curry ramen, Kare to Men also serves curry with their fragrant yellow rice, so if you are not a fan of noodles, you can also try their great curry without them.
Kare to Men is located in the East of Tokyo, next to the not so well known Kiyosumi-shirakawa station (清澄白河駅), which is served by the Hanzomon and Oedo line, therefore it can easily be accessed from basically anywhere in Tokyo. From the station, the ramen shop can be found within a less than 5 minute walk.
