Nissin Cup Noodle Seafood Kimchi Jiggae Flavor

Winter is the time of nabe in Japan and the time for jiggae in Korea. Comforting hot stew like soups, sometimes also described as hot pot. Nissin brings the comforting hot and spicy flavors of a Korean style seafood kimchi jiggae stew into the cup noodle format to keep you warm and full this winter. The red packaging of their “Seafood Kimchi Jiggae” cup noodle promises spice and flavor to warm you up from the inside. Note that the “kimchi jiggae” in カップヌードル海鮮キムチゲ is contracted to “kimchige”, however everyone understands what they are talking about.

Let’s see if the Nissin Cup Noodle Kimchi Jiggae can keep these promises or if it leaves our hearts cold.

Opening the lid of the Kimchi Jiggae cup noodle reveals red and hot looking powder seasoning topped with dehydrated nira garlic chives, pieces of squid, kimchi bits and the classic yellow egg blobs.

Preparation

As always with cup noodles without any other pouches, just pour in water and wait for 3 minutes.

Review

Directly after opening the lid after the water pour, a pretty strong and fragrant aroma hits your nostrils. And the first slurp confirms what your nose and the intense color of the soup promise. A word of caution, if you are not a kimchi and seafood flavor fan, this cup might be too intense for you. For me, this was probably one of the best Nissin cup noodles I ever had. The flavor is strong enough to really be noticeable with every slurp, so you don’t have to drink soup in between to remember what flavor you are actually eating right now. The spiciness is noticeable, but not something I would really call “spicy”. It says 2 out of 5 levels of spiciness on the cup after all.

After all the noodles are fished out, I could have imagined dropping in some rice into the leftover soup to polish it off. That’s probably what I will do next time, since I will surely get the Kimchi Jiggae (or Kimuchige) cup noodle again. Today’s score is probably topping out what I will be able to give for a Nissin cup noodle that does not have any kind of additional pouches or higher quality ingredients.
