Nissin Pork Chowder Cup Noodles 日清ポークチャウダーヌードル
Now here is a cup noodle that surely captured my eye with its quite unusual name, which makes you guess what it would taste like. I have had clam chowder in the past, but I had never heard of pork chowder before.
Apparently the pork chowder flavor had been around already in the 80s in Japan and was quite popular at the time. So let’s find out what this blast from the past tastes like.
Content
Classic dehydrated eggs blobs and meat pieces with soup powder already all around the noodles. Standard cup noodle fare, no surprises.
Preparation
Fill cup with boiling hot water up to the line, close lid and wait 3 minutes.
Review
Not entirely sure what I expected. Maybe somethin akin to clam chowder? Something creamy and thick, well, something “chowdery”. Instead, the soup was more like a thin tonkotsu, flavored with a light soy sauce seasoning.
While not terrible, it makes sense when you think about this being a recipe from the 80s. It does taste a bit old fashioned, more mild than what we might be used to these days. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t terrible, but definitely underwhelming and disappointing, especially when compared to all the things I imagined “pork chowder” could be.
Besides the soup, the “meat” was also quite disappointing, weird thin slices of questionable origin, although the cup claims it was pork. The noodles are standard cup noodle fare.
